And the results are in.

The good news:

My tumor was actually a bit smaller than it had appeared on screening tests. We expected it to be 1.7cm and it was only 1.5cm and all the margins of the tumor are clear! Meaning I do not have to have anymore breast surgery.

The small bundle of lymph nodes that were removed only had two lymph nodes. One lymph node was completely clear. However, the second lymph node showed 1.7mm of cancer cells so onto the meh news.

Not as good news:

The small amount of cancer cells in my lymph node is considered micro metastatic. If I was over 65 they would consider this small amount equivalent to a clear lymph node. But in the last ten years research shows that for pre-menopausal women with breast cancer even a small amount of cells earns you chemo.

I spoke with my oncologist yesterday who confirmed that yes the best course of treatment for me is to do chemo. Everything but the kitchen sink is what she termed my treatment as because we want to make sure this does not reoccur. While we were really hoping to avoid chemo Greg and I both feel very confident that this is the right call and we know we will get through it because I have such an amazing support team on my side!

I am feeling really good post surgery and thrilled that the surgery portion of treatment was minimally disruptive to my life. Happy to be able to still hold my babies and enjoy all this beautiful weather we have been having. I will be starting chemo on May 13th so until then I am looking forward to planning and celebrating my babies 1st birthday!
